How the conversion works

Multiply the focal length printed on the lens by your camera's crop factor. Most Nikon, Sony and Fujifilm APS-C cameras use 1.5×, while Canon APS-C cameras use 1.6×.

The result is a full-frame-equivalent field of view, not a change to the lens itself. A 35mm lens remains a 35mm lens; the smaller sensor records a narrower portion of its image circle.

Worked example: a 35mm lens on APS-C

A 35mm lens on a Nikon, Sony or Fujifilm APS-C body gives a field of view similar to 52.5mm on full frame (35 × 1.5). On a Canon APS-C body it is similar to 56mm (35 × 1.6). That small difference can matter when matching framing across camera systems.
